PNOA Outdoor Safety Workshop IV: Cycling Safety & First Aid

What a fantastic day for learning and connecting with fellow outdoor enthusiasts! Despite a rainy start to the morning that had us all bundling up, the skies cleared into a beautifully sunny afternoon, mirroring the bright energy of everyone who gathered for PNOA’s Outdoor Safety Workshop IV. Held at Elgin Hall in South Surrey, this event drew an eager crowd ready to dive deep into the essentials of cycling safety and first aid—key skills for any adventure on two wheels or beyond. If you’re passionate about safer trails and stronger communities, events like this are what PNOA is all about.

A Smooth Start: Registration and Welcoming Vibes

We kicked things off right at 1:00 PM with registration, where participants signed in, grabbed name tags, and snagged some PNOA swag. The buzz was electric—conversations flowed about recent hikes, upcoming rides, and that one time someone’s chain snapped mid-hill. By 1:30 PM, we were all settled in, ready to roll (pun intended).

Mastering First Aid Basics with Suzey

From 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, our very own Suzey took the stage for an eye-opening session on First Aid Basics. Suzey, with her years of wilderness first responder experience, broke it down simply: why first aid matters (to prevent minor issues from becoming major emergencies), what tools and techniques to use, and how to apply them in real-world scenarios like a twisted ankle on a trail or a scrape from a bike tumble.

One standout takeaway? Knowing when to call emergency services. Suzey emphasized acting fast if someone:

•  Is unconscious or has altered consciousness

•  Has difficulty breathing or is not breathing

•  Has chest pain or pressure

•  Is bleeding severely (严重出血)

•  Has a seizure (癫痫发作)

•  Has a suspected poisoning

•  Has a severe burn

•  Has a suspected broken bone or spinal injury

•  Shows signs of stroke

She also shared golden rules for medication planning on outdoor trips:

•  Bring more medication than needed (an extra week’s supply)

•  Keep medications in original containers with labels

•  Pack medications in carry-on luggage

•  Bring written prescriptions with generic drug names

•  Research medication legality in destination countries

•  Consider time zone changes for medication schedules

Hands-on demos had everyone practicing bandages and splints, turning theoretical knowledge into practical confidence. Suzey’s passion for preparedness was contagious—by the end, folks were swapping stories of how these tips could have saved the day on past outings.

Quick Break and Recharge

At 3:30 PM, we paused for a well-deserved break. Sunny skies meant impromptu chats outside with coffee in hand, fueling up for the afternoon’s pedal-powered focus. It was a perfect moment to stretch, network, and soak in that PNW sunshine.

Gearing Up: Cycling Safety and Bike Maintenance with James

The highlight for many was James Chen’s session from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Cycling Safety & Bike Maintenance. James, a seasoned cyclist and PNOA volunteer, made complex topics feel approachable with his clear, step-by-step approach. He started with cycling basics (骑行基本常识), covering the main bicycle types:

•  Road bikes (drop handlebars /

•  Mountain bikes (flat handlebars /

•  Others like cargo bikes or hybrids

Next up: Riding gear checks James stressed the must-haves for safety and comfort:

•  Helmet (头盔)

•  Glasses/sunglasses (眼镜/墨镜 – strictly windproof options)

•  Gloves (手套)

•  Cycling clothing (骑行服)

•  Shoes (regular or clipless /

•  Balaclava or face cover for wind protection

Don’t forget the carry gear essentials

•  Tool kit (工具包)

•  Two spare inner tubes/tires

•  Two CO2 cartridges, plus a manual or electric pump

•  Energy bars (能量棒)

•  ID, credit card, and cash

James wrapped with a live demo on pre-ride bike checks, basic maintenance, and— the crowd favorite—how to change a tire on the fly. From airing up tires to spotting worn brakes, his tips were gold for beginners and pros alike. Attendees left with checklists in hand, ready to hit the roads (or trails) smarter and safer.

Wrapping Up: Cleanup and Community Spirit

As the sun dipped lower, we powered through a quick cleanup from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM, leaving the space spotless and our minds buzzing. It was a team effort that embodied PNOA’s commitment to stewardship.

A huge shoutout to our incredible speakers, James Chen and Suzey, whose expertise and enthusiasm made this workshop unforgettable. Your dedication to empowering our community is what keeps the PNOA fire burning!
