Where Autumn Meets Winter | October 11, 2026

On October 11, 2026, fourteen PNOA members set off in three cars for a memorable day hike to Maple Pass and Rainy Lake in Washington State, USA.

It was an early start, but the spectacular scenery awaiting us made every minute worthwhile. We arrived at the trailhead at around 8:00 a.m. and patiently waited about 30 minutes for the restrooms before beginning our adventure. The weather was beautiful, with brilliant sunshine illuminating the mountains and fresh snow adding a delicate finishing touch to the autumn landscape.

A Magical Meeting of Autumn and Winter

The Heather Pass–Maple Pass Loop is renowned for its spectacular fall colors and sweeping views of the North Cascades. In October, the trail offered something even more special: autumn had not yet completely faded, while the first snow had already transformed the higher ridges and mountain forests.

Red alpine shrubs, golden larches dusted with snow, evergreen forests, rugged peaks, and deep valleys created a striking contrast of colors and textures. It felt as though two seasons had come together to paint the mountains in their own unique way.

We chose to hike the loop counterclockwise, following the route that gradually climbs toward Heather Pass and Maple Pass. With the sunshine ahead of us, it was a wonderful way to experience the scenery along the trail.

Every turn revealed another breathtaking view. Lake Ann rested peacefully beneath the surrounding peaks, while the dramatic North Cascades stretched into the distance. The fresh snow highlighted the mountain contours, making the landscape even more impressive against the clear blue sky.

The trail was challenging in places, but the magnificent scenery and the cheerful company made every step worthwhile. Along the way, we shared conversations, laughter, and moments of quiet appreciation for the natural beauty around us.

Rainy Lake: A Peaceful Finale

After completing the Maple Pass Loop, we continued to Rainy Lake, giving ourselves time to enjoy another side of this beautiful alpine destination.

Unlike the mountain loop, the Rainy Lake Trail is paved, relatively flat, and accessible to a wide range of visitors. The path winds beneath towering conifers and crosses peaceful wooden bridges, creating a refreshing woodland experience after the more demanding mountain hike.

At the end of the trail, Rainy Lake revealed its brilliant turquoise waters, framed by steep, glacier-carved mountain walls. The calm lake and dramatic surroundings offered a beautiful contrast to the expansive alpine views we had enjoyed earlier in the day.

By approximately 4:15 p.m., we had completed our day’s adventure. Tired but happy, we returned with wonderful memories, beautiful photographs, and the satisfaction of having shared such a special day outdoors.

More Than a Beautiful Hike

The best outdoor adventures are about more than reaching a destination. They are about experiencing nature together, encouraging one another along the trail, and sharing the simple happiness of being surrounded by mountains and good company.

Our heartfelt thanks go to PNOA for organizing this trip, to the drivers for their time and effort, and to all fourteen participants for making the day so enjoyable.

The mountains gave us unforgettable scenery, but the companionship along the way made the experience truly meaningful.

The beauty of the mountains stays in our memories; the warmth of the journey stays in our hearts.

Hiking Tips for Future Visitors

  • Start early: Parking at the Rainy Lake Trailhead is limited. Additional parking may be available along both sides of the highway, where permitted. Arriving early helps avoid the busiest period.
  • Dress for changing conditions: October mountain weather can change quickly. Bring extra layers, a warm hat, and gloves.
  • Bring microspikes: Fresh snow and icy sections can make parts of the Maple Pass Loop slippery. Check current trail conditions and carry appropriate traction equipment.
  • Download offline maps: Cell service may be unreliable in the mountains. Download your navigation maps in advance and know how to use them.
  • Protect your phone and camera: Bring a backup battery and ensure you have enough storage for all those incredible mountain photographs.
  • Check cross-border requirements: Since the trail is in the United States, make sure you have the necessary travel documents and review current park and trailhead requirements before departure.

We look forward to more adventures with PNOA, exploring the outdoors safely, building friendships, and creating memories together.

Heather Pass–Maple Pass

Rainy Lake:

We are the Champion, My Friend! And we’ll keep on fighting till the end!
