PNOA’s First Step into the Vibrant Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Parade 2026 – Year of the Horse!

On February 22, 2026, under a sky that decided to shower us with rain, the Pacific Northwest Outdoor Association (PNOA) proudly made our debut at the 52nd Annual Vancouver Chinatown Spring Festival Parade – one of the city’s most colorful and largest Lunar New Year celebrations!

A fantastic group of 22 participants from PNOA came together for this milestone event. This was our very first time joining such a grand community parade, and despite our lack of experience in organizing for one, the energy, laughter, and joy from our members carried us through the entire route with high spirits. We gathered at the starting point on Pender Street & Shanghai Alley at 10:30 AM, ready to march as the parade officially kicked off at 11:00 AM.

Even though the rain kept pouring, our spirits stayed sky-high! Bundled up in rain gear (and yes, many of us brought our trusty hiking backpacks with extra layers, hats, socks, and warm clothes – outdoor group habits die hard!), we walked proudly, waving to the crowds and soaking in the festive atmosphere. The streets of historic Chinatown came alive with over 100 groups and more than 5,000 participants – lion dances thundering, dragons weaving, marching bands playing, and red envelopes flying everywhere. It truly felt like Canada’s grandest Spring Festival celebration.

A few key reminders we followed (and lessons learned for next time):

•  Safety first – We stuck together, avoided inviting strangers into our group, and knew the organizers had first aid and lost & found stations ready.

•  Public transit is the way – With such a huge turnout, driving would have been a challenge; we recommend everyone plan accordingly in future years.

•  Preparation pays off – Our hiking gear helped us stay dry and comfortable despite the weather.

A huge thank you to Yolanda for organizing this wonderful outing for PNOA! All 22 of us had an absolute blast participating, sharing laughs, taking photos, and feeling the community spirit. It was heartwarming to see so many friends come together to celebrate culture, tradition, and new beginnings in the Year of the Horse.

This debut taught us a lot – from logistics to timing to handling unpredictable Vancouver weather – and we’re already excited and determined to come back stronger, more prepared, and with even more members next year!

Together, we walk farther, safer, and happier.

Thank you to everyone who joined, cheered us on, or followed along. Here’s to more adventures – both in the mountains and in the heart of the city!
