Exploring Wedgemount Lake and Ice Cave: An Unforgettable Adventure

Our journey to Wedgemount Lake and Ice Cave on May 12, 2024, was nothing short of spectacular. Despite the challenging conditions, the breathtaking scenery and the camaraderie of our group made it an experience to remember.

The Journey Begins:

The hike is no small feat, covering a distance of 15.43 kilometers with an elevation gain of 1,413 meters. Our group of 14 set out early in the morning, well-prepared for the strenuous day ahead. Given the current trail conditions, we highly recommend bringing crampons or microspikes, snowshoes, and trekking poles. These gears are essential for safely navigating the snow-covered paths, which dominate 80% of the hike through dense forest.

The Ascent:

As we ascended, the forest surrounded us with its serene beauty. The crisp air and the crunch of snow underfoot created a meditative rhythm. Despite the challenging terrain, the anticipation of what lay ahead kept our spirits high.

Reaching the First Lake:

The last 20% of the hike, although the most strenuous, rewards hikers with some of the most stunning views imaginable. As we emerged from the forest, the semi-melted Wedgemount Lake came into view, its icy surface reflecting the towering snow-capped mountains. The lake, still partially frozen, added a mystical charm to the landscape.

Exploring Tupper Lake and Ice Cave:

From Wedgemount Lake, we continued our adventure to Tupper Lake and the Ice Cave. The Ice Cave, with its crystalline formations and ethereal beauty, was the highlight of our hike. Standing inside the cave, surrounded by walls of ice, we felt a profound sense of awe and wonder.

The Descent:

We strongly recommend starting the hike early in the morning. The descent can be particularly challenging, especially as daylight fades. Navigating the forest in the dark can be tricky and potentially hazardous. Our group managed to make it back just as dusk settled, grateful for the early start.

Final Thoughts:

Hiking to Wedgemount Lake and Ice Cave is a challenging but incredibly rewarding experience. The pristine beauty of the semi-melted lake, the snow-covered mountains, and the magical Ice Cave make every step worthwhile. If you’re planning this hike, ensure you’re well-prepared with the right gear and start early to make the most of your adventure.

Gather your friends, prepare adequately, and embark on this unforgettable journey. The memories you’ll make amidst the stunning wilderness of Wedgemount Lake and Ice Cave are ones you’ll cherish forever.

    Mt Seymour
