2024 Third Quarter Newsletter

Dear Members,

We hope you’ve had an adventurous and fulfilling summer! From scenic hikes through alpine landscapes to thrilling paddling trips on serene lakes, the third quarter of 2024 was packed with unforgettable outdoor activities. Let’s look back at some of the amazing events we shared:

July 2024 Highlights:

July 1: Our Canada Day celebration saw two exciting activities. The Windy Joe Hike, led by Paul, took members up to the lookout for breathtaking views of the Cascades, while Suzey guided a scenic Kayaking Trip along peaceful waters, offering a perfect summer start.

July 5-15: Suzey led a group on the iconic Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit. Over 10 days, participants paddled through pristine lakes, rivers, and portages in the Cariboo Mountains, enjoying wildlife sightings, starry nights, and the camaraderie that comes with tackling a wilderness challenge.

July 20: Two spectacular hikes filled this day with adventure. Tim took a group up the Sea to Summit Trail, offering them panoramic views of Howe Sound after a demanding ascent. Meanwhile, Allan led the Iceberg Lake Hike, where participants were treated to the cool beauty of the lake’s turquoise waters surrounded by glaciers.

July 21: Cyclists had a great time during the Boundary Bay Dyke Trail Cycling event, led by Tim. The group enjoyed a leisurely ride along the coastal wetlands, spotting birds and taking in the open views of the bay.

July 18 to 22: A group of PNOA adventurers set out on an unforgettable kayaking trip through the breathtaking Desolation Islands, led by Jane Zhao. Known for its rugged coastline, hidden coves, and serene waters, the Desolation Islands provided the perfect backdrop for exploration. Participants paddled through calm inlets, camped on secluded beaches, and witnessed stunning sunrises and sunsets over the water. With Jane’s expert guidance, this trip was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty— a true highlight of the summer!

July 27: A day filled with both paddling and hiking! Tim & Lisa led the group on the Mt. Rohr Lake/Mt. Rohr Hike, which offered dramatic views of alpine meadows and rugged peaks. At the same time, Paul & Yolanda guided the River of Golden Dreams Paddle in Whistler, a peaceful paddle through meandering waterways surrounded by the stunning mountain backdrop.

August 2024 Highlights:

Aug 1-31: In the 2024 Great Cycle Challenge, the PNOA GCC 2024 team achieved remarkable results. We raised $8,579 for the SickKids Foundation to help research and treat childhood cancers.


Aug 3-5: The Tundra Lake Backpacking Trip, led by Susan, was a remote and breathtaking adventure. The group traversed alpine meadows and rugged terrain, camping in one of the most secluded and picturesque locations of the summer.


Aug 3: Tim & Li led the Rainbow Lake & Rainbow Mountain Hike, where hikers ascended through beautiful alpine terrain and were rewarded with sweeping views of the Whistler area from the summit of Rainbow Mountain.

Aug 4: The popular Widgeon Falls Paddle & Hike, led by Paul & Yolanda, saw participants paddling through the tranquil waters of Pitt Lake before enjoying a scenic hike to the waterfalls. The cool mist from the falls was the perfect way to beat the summer heat.

Aug 5: Paul & Yolanda hosted another water-based event, the Sasamat Lake Paddle Event at Pitt River. Members explored the peaceful lake, enjoying the sunny day and calm waters.

Aug 5 & 11: Tim & Li organized a Multi-City One-Day Cycling Event across Greater Vancouver, giving members a chance to explore various scenic trails throughout the city while enjoying a day of social cycling.

Aug 10: The Sky Pilot Hike, led by Li, was an intense and rewarding adventure. This steep hike challenged participants but provided magnificent views of the Squamish area once they reached the summit.

Aug 8: The Seymour Hike, led by Roy Cao & James Zhang, was a North Shore classic, giving members stunning vistas of Vancouver and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Aug 16-25: Tim led the Yellowstone Cycling Trip, where participants experienced the iconic landscapes of Yellowstone National Park. This multi-day cycling journey took them through geysers, canyons, and wildlife-rich areas, making it an unforgettable experience.

Aug 18: Paul led the Mount Macfarlane/Pierce Lakes Hike, a challenging climb that rewarded hikers with stunning views of glacial lakes and surrounding peaks. It was a great test of endurance and a highlight for alpine enthusiasts.

Aug 25-31: Suzey’s Broken Group Islands Kayaking Trip offered participants a chance to explore the calm waters and hidden coves of this Pacific Northwest gem. Paddling through the islands and camping on remote beaches, it was a tranquil and adventurous escape from the busy summer season.  

Aug 31: Yuki guided the group on a thrilling ascent of Mt. Brunswick, the highest peak in the Howe Sound Crest Range. The clear weather made for spectacular views from the summit, offering a perfect ending to the month.

September 2024 Highlights:

Sep 7: This weekend featured two fantastic events. Paul led the Harrison River Paddle, a relaxing journey through calm waters, perfect for soaking in the scenery and spotting wildlife. At the same time, Allan led the Crown Mountain Hike, a steep and rugged trail with incredible summit views, giving participants a thrilling sense of accomplishment.

Sep 8: The Lindenman Lake/Flora Peak Hike, co-led by Tim, Lisa & Yuki, offered members a beautiful combination of lake and alpine scenery. With shimmering lakes and panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, it was a highlight for hikers seeking adventure and beauty.

Sep 15: The Dragon Boat Event, led by Li & Paul, saw members paddling through False Creek, working together as a team. It was a fun-filled day on the water, followed by a social gathering to celebrate the success of the race.


Sep 21-29: A major highlight of the season was the Banff Autumn Trip, led by Tim, Paul, Li & Yuki. This multi-day adventure took participants through some of the most iconic landscapes in the Canadian Rockies. From hiking the stunning Lake O’Hara alpine circuits to exploring the autumn beauty of the Skoki Loop, the trip was filled with breathtaking scenery, wildlife, and vibrant fall colors.

Sep 28: Allan rounded out the month with the Mount Harvey Hike, a challenging ascent that provided hikers with stunning 360-degree views from the summit. Clear skies and crisp fall air made this a perfect day for mountain enthusiasts.

October 2024 Highlights:

Oct 5: The quarter concluded with a meaningful Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway Cleanup & Potluck at the Tsawwassen Shelter. Members came together to clean up the coastal area, followed by a delicious potluck to celebrate the spirit of community and conservation.

      Highlights#1 这次活动PNOA由经验丰富的白水先生担纲领队和通盘指挥, 他周密的部署和事无巨细的定制计划,从路线到设备配备堪称精细完美, 为了防止有人掉队失联, 每人配备一部对讲机以防万一。 21位勇士手脚并用,行走在巨岩缝隙间,从早上7点开始攀爬,用时7个多小时。 路线上我们反其道而行之,从Peak3 – Peak 2- Peak 1, 避开行人密集,道路容易阻塞的天梯和铁链,其次人员分为快队和慢队, 有人开路有人断后, 白水先生穿插其中,每个转弯点都有人用对讲机提醒,没有错过一个view point! 登上第三峰眺望第一峰和第二峰,看到上面的人非常渺小, 手机需要个横屏·。应该说第三峰最容易, 不用爬梯或铁链, 山头有一汪清水, 倒影着蓝天白云,和我们team的五颜六色的着装,大家互相拍照,有队友还拿出户外椅端坐在高耸入云的山尖尖,凹造型摆拍, 好不惬意啊。 第二峰开始难度加大, 山石嶙峋,又陡又窄岩壁,有几段需要拉铁链爬铁梯, 然而最难的登顶第一峰, 经过千万年的冰河洗刷,很多岩石都成了一块光溜溜的岩壁, 几乎垂直于地面, 尤其是直上直下的云梯真的是考验胆儿的, 光秃秃的山顶, 四周毫无防护十分陡峭近于绝壁, 登上云梯我告诉我自己哦我今天到底是干了件多么疯狂的事情啊。。。 在大家全部登顶的那一刻, 胜利的喜悦溢于言表, 站在山巅上我们team大摄影师为大家留下英雄般的合影,瑜伽高手尽兴表演, 段子手妙语涟涟,石壁,溪流,高耸入云的劲松, 阳光透过树叶间隙洒向人间, 照在身上暖洋洋的, 这是人的内心与大自然的共振, 可遇不可求。。。 世界之美在于探险, 总有身体·在地狱,眼睛在天堂的征服感, 毕竟人是需要走出舒服区有一点探险的勇气, 上高路远看世界, 也是找自己。 感谢领队白水先生, 感谢队友的无私相助互相关照,感恩王大摄影师慷慨为大家拍照, 特别是男队员谦虚地留在后面断后,在每个路口等待和提醒大家,他们是大海,Roy,Romeo,Tony, Raymond。。。呵呵 山河远阔, 人间值得, 真好

    没雪的夏季怎么提高滑雪技能 – 《Total Skiing》读书笔记

    不管大家是多么的恋恋不舍, 滑雪季终究是过去了. 那么怎么在这漫长的夏季为下个雪季的滑雪做哪些准备呢? 最近我读了一本书, Chris Fellows 写的Total Skiing. 这是我读的第一本关于滑雪的书, 觉得很不错就把读书笔记分享各大家, 希望有所帮助. 书中详细解释练习各个动作原因和效果, 看一遍原著肯定会受益更多. 滑雪教练认证考试往往侧重于技能培训, 而这本书是教大家按运动表现金字塔进行恰当的训练,以获得最佳的滑雪表现. 换句话说, 这本书教的是内功, 而不是招式. 而夏季正好是修炼内功的时候. 北美滑雪训练中心使用四层金字塔模型来评估动作的质量. 最底层是功能性动作, 往上依次是体能, 技术和战术. 金字塔的四个层次涉及滑雪表现中因果关系的动态过程. 功能性动作是基础. 如果功能性动作不够扎实, 上面的体能, 技术和战术全部会失去效用.  为找到自身的不对称或局限因素, 作者提出了一套体系对金字塔个层级进行技能评估. 通过评估滑雪者可以知道在哪些方面有改善的空间, 并且列出了相应的训练方法. 我们需要对各层级进行技能评估, 才能制定有针对性的训练计划. 评估也很简单, 自己在家就可以做. 一 功能性动作 1 概念 功能性动作可以分解为稳定性和灵活性两个方面: 稳定性指在外部条件变化和外力的影响下身体保持稳定的能力. 包括平衡,力量和肌肉耐力这几个要素.  滑雪时我们需要让身体一部分固定, 同时伸缩相邻部分, 这样才能在穿行折转中控制速度和保持一致的姿态. 灵活性涵盖关节正常活动度和肌肉柔韧性两方面. 它是正确动作, 伤害预防和流畅滑行的核心. 仅仅有良好的灵活性和核心稳定性并不足以培养精湛的滑雪动作. 滑雪是一种动态平衡. 动态平衡取决于基础支撑. CSIA 把保持动态平衡的动作称为行进中动作, 这是该联盟教学方法的基石….
