Discovering the Beauty of Ptarmigan Ridge and Picture Lake with PNOA

This past weekend, I had the chance to hike one of the most scenic trails in the Mt. Baker area – Ptarmigan Ridge – followed by a peaceful walk around Picture Lake. If you’re looking for stunning mountain views, glaciers, and crystal-clear reflections, these two hikes offer an unforgettable experience.

Ptarmigan Ridge: Glacial Grandeur, Mountain Goats, and Rugged Peaks

The Ptarmigan Ridge hike starts at the Artist Point parking lot, already boasting breathtaking views of Mt. Shuksan and Mt. Baker. From here, the trail winds along rocky ridges, with snowfields visible even in late summer. The hike isn’t overly strenuous, but there are a few sections that require careful footing due to loose rocks.

One of the most exciting moments on the way to the ridge was spotting a group of mountain goats grazing on a rocky slope! These majestic creatures seemed unfazed by our presence, gracefully navigating the steep terrain. It was a reminder of just how wild and untamed this landscape is. If you’re lucky, you might spot them too—just be sure to keep a respectful distance.

As you ascend, you’re treated to panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and glaciers. The views of the Easton Glacier on Mt. Baker are particularly captivating, with its icy blue surface contrasting against the rugged volcanic rock. Wildlife is abundant here—along with the mountain goats, you might see marmots and pikas scurrying about.

I reached the ridge, which opens up to wide vistas of the surrounding peaks, offering a serene yet humbling experience. The hike offers a great mix of alpine meadows, volcanic rock formations, and snow patches that linger year-round. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re walking on top of the world.

Picture Lake: Reflections of Tranquility

After the more challenging Ptarmigan Ridge, I headed to Picture Lake for a more leisurely stroll. The short loop trail around the lake is incredibly picturesque, with Mt. Shuksan’s reflection mirrored perfectly in the calm water. This spot is a photographer’s paradise and is especially stunning during the golden hour.

Though the hike around Picture Lake is brief and easy, the peaceful surroundings and the vibrant fall colors made it a great way to end the day. It’s also a perfect spot for a quiet moment of reflection (no pun intended) or to simply enjoy nature’s beauty.

Final Thoughts

Both Ptarmigan Ridge and Picture Lake offer their own unique experiences, but they complement each other perfectly. Ptarmigan Ridge challenges you with its rugged terrain, wildlife sightings (especially the mountain goats!), and high-altitude vistas, while Picture Lake provides a calming respite surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in the Pacific Northwest.

If you’re ever in the Mt. Baker area, I highly recommend combining these two hikes. Together, they showcase the raw beauty of the region, making for a day filled with adventure and serenity.

    Mt Seymour
