Conquering Brunswick Mountain with PNOA Members: A Day of Adventure

Hike Information

Difficulty: Difficult
Distance: 15.6 KM
Elevation Gain: 1,595M
Highest Elevation: 1,788M
Parking: Arrive early to secure a spot.

A Challenging Ascent

It was a beautiful sunny day on August 31, 2024, a group of us from PNOA set out to conquer Brunswick Mountain, the highest peak in the North Shore mountains. The excitement was palpable as we prepared to tackle one of the most demanding hikes in the area. The trail, starting near sea level in Lions Bay, quickly reminded us of its difficulty with a relentless, steep ascent that would test our stamina and determination.

Brunswick Mountain is known for its physically challenging nature, and it didn’t disappoint. The climb, though slightly less steep than Mount Harvey, was an unending uphill battle that pushed us to our limits. Despite the muscle burn and fatigue, the anticipation of the panoramic views at the summit kept us motivated.

Breathtaking Views Await

Upon reaching the summit, we were greeted with some of the most stunning views the North Shore has to offer. The iconic Howe Sound stretched out below us, with the nearby peaks of the Lions, Mount Harvey, and Mount Hanover standing majestically in the distance. On such a clear day, the sight was nothing short of awe-inspiring, making every grueling step worth the effort.

Beyond the famous summit view, Brunswick Mountain also provided us with incredible vistas of Brunswick Lake, Hanover Lake, and Deeks Lake. Peaks such as Coburg, Gotha, and Hat Mountain were also visible, adding to the mesmerizing 360-degree panorama that surrounded us.

A Technical Challenge

While the hike is undoubtedly steep, it also presents some technical challenges, particularly as you approach the summit. The final stretch involves scrambling over exposed rocks where falling is not an option. The “no fall zone” is brief, but it requires careful attention and steady nerves. Most of us managed the scramble without issue, but it’s a section that shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially if you have a fear of heights.

Tips for Future Hikers

Given the popularity of the trail and the limited parking in Lions Bay, it’s crucial to start early—no later than 7 am on weekends during the summer. If you plan to bring a dog, be mindful of the scramble at the top, as it may be too difficult for them to navigate safely.

Final Thoughts

Hiking Brunswick Mountain with the PNOA members was an unforgettable experience. The challenging ascent, coupled with the rewarding views at the top, made this adventure one for the books. For those looking to push their limits and soak in some of the best natural beauty near Vancouver, Brunswick Mountain is a must-do hike. Just be prepared for a tough climb and don’t forget to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

How do you measure tread depth on your tires?
