July 4–5, 2026

To prepare for this year’s Mt. Robson and Assiniboine trips, PNOA organized a New Leader Training over July 4–5, 2026. New leaders joined the training on either July 4 or July 5, with over 20 participants in total across the two days. With beautiful weather and positive energy throughout the weekend, everyone had a rewarding and enjoyable learning experience.

A big thank you to our experienced PNOA leaders for taking time out of their busy schedules to support and train new leaders. Through this valuable combination of theory and hands-on practice, participants gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to lead safely, confidently, and responsibly in the outdoors. While leading may look simple from the outside, it actually involves many details, responsibilities, and thoughtful decision-making behind the scenes.

Throughout the training, we learned a great deal about how to respond to different situations, what to look out for, and what actions or suggestions may be most appropriate in the field. It was a meaningful opportunity to build skills, exchange ideas, and gain confidence for future trips.

Training Highlights

  • Leader introductions and team connection
  • Sharing leadership experience and best practices
  • Navigation, route planning, and field decision-making
  • Team communication and leader role coordination
  • Gear checks and discussion of personal equipment preparation
  • Risk management and important safety considerations
  • Scenario discussions for unexpected situations such as getting lost, injuries, and changing weather
  • Experience sharing related to Mt. Robson and Assiniboine trips
  • Q&A session to answer participants’ questions

The training was full of useful knowledge, practical insights, and encouragement. We came away with a much better understanding of the responsibilities of leading and a stronger appreciation for the preparation behind every successful trip. The learning continues, and we look forward to growing from “newbie leaders” into capable and dependable trip leaders for the PNOA community.

Thank you again to all the senior leaders who generously shared their time, experience, and guidance. Your support helps strengthen our team and prepares the next generation of leaders for safe and meaningful adventures.
