PNOA Kayaking Course Recap

The May sea breeze carried a chill, but it couldn’t cool the passion of the 24 participants for the ocean and their spirit of exploration. This four-session kayaking training, organized by PNOA and led by Victor Guo, took place at Elgin Heritage Park, Crescent Beach, and White Rock Beach in South Surrey. Each session became a special memory, thanks to the professionalism of the coach and the enthusiasm of the participants.

Although the weather was chilly for each session, everyone’s enthusiasm remained high throughout.

Highlights & Participant Feedback

The four sessions saw a total of 24 students. Each session built upon basic training with deeper and more challenging content. Coach Sunny was known for being thorough and dedicated, often extending the session time by two extra hours to ensure all questions were answered and concepts were clearly understood. He meticulously covered topics such as tides, wind direction, orientation, and rescue techniques.

“I was really looking forward to this. Today’s lesson on distance, direction, tides, currents, and wind — I only grasped a general idea. Definitely can’t apply it myself yet. Being a trip leader is not easy.”

— A participant

“The coach is meticulous. Two full pages of checklists — he went through them item by item without missing a single one.”

— A participant

Beyond the technical lessons, what stood out most was the camaraderie and growth experienced together:

“Haha, the coach kept flipping me into the water! I guess what you fear the most always comes true. But Sunny really is a great instructor — responsible and dedicated.”

“It was a bit challenging, but with everyone encouraging each other, sharing our thoughts, and the instructor’s detailed explanations — after more than seven demonstrations — we finally knew we’d met the coach’s expectations.”

After the final session, participant Mandy composed a heartfelt poem titled “Support”, dedicated to Coach Sunny and the PNOA organization.

This was not just a journey to improve skills — it was a dialogue between the soul and nature.

Closing & Group Photos

Though the four sessions have come to an end, the smiles, the splashy wipe-outs, and the shared laughter are forever frozen in the early summer breeze.

Scroll down to view the group photos from each session. Thank you to every participant and to our devoted coach.

Special thanks to Coach Sunny, and to Leader Victor Guo for their hard work — and to every single one of you who took the first step to challenge yourself and journey with nature. We look forward to meeting again on the water!

    Mt Seymour
