PNOA Carpool Policy

At PNOA, we advocate for environmental protection and green travel, so we encourage everyone to carpool whenever possible for our activities. Below are the PNOA Carpool Fee Guidelines: / 我们 PNOA 倡导环保、绿色出行,所以每次活动都尽可能大家可以 carpool 一起走。

1. Trips Within 500 km / 500

In terms of carpooling on PNOA trips within 500 km or less, the driver will be paid by passengers at the rate of $0.25/km per person if there is only 1 passenger, $0.20/km per person if there are 2 passengers, and $0.15/km per person if there are 3 or more passengers.

2. Trips Exceeding 500 km / 500

In terms of carpooling on PNOA trips exceeding 500 km, it’s recommended that all passengers, apart from the vehicle owner, share the fuel costs. Additionally, the car owner should be reimbursed CAD $7 per 100 km to cover vehicle depreciation, including expenses like car washes, maintenance, and other related costs, which also helps save time on mileage calculation.

3. Rough Road Surcharge /

An additional surcharge of $0.04/km per vehicle may be considered for trips that involve driving on rough or forest service roads. /

4. Shared Expenses and Incidents /

All carpooling participants, including the driver but excluding PNOA, may share evenly the cost of traffic violation tickets, repairing costs for vehicle damage occurring during the trip not covered by insurance, and the insurance deductible if covered.

5. Calculation, Flexibility & Etiquette /

  • Mileage can be calculated based on the route distance on Google Maps or the odometer reading on the vehicle.
  • Passengers and drivers in each car may also negotiate and agree upon their own fee-sharing standards.
  • Friends who need a carpool, please prepare two pairs of shoes (one being your hiking boots); please change into clean shoes before and after the hike to help the car owner keep the vehicle clean—thank you!
  • The association encourages everyone to finish breakfast before getting into the car; since everyone reacts differently to food smells, if you plan to bring food or snacks to eat in the car, please be sure to get the driver’s consent first.
